Annotation: The article attempts to show the essence of different approaches to assessing library performance and quality of its activities. The author conducted bibliometrical analysis of over 3 thousand not published theses on librarianship and information sciences dated 1903–2004 in English and over 400 publications in the journals on librarianship and information sciences for the last 15 years.
Key words: foreign library and information science, assessment of efficiency, tools of measurement of library work’s efficiency, complex analysis.
