The main collection is structurally divided into subfunds of books, periodicals, newspapers, dissertations, taking into account the chronology of transferring of the publications in to microforms. It has about 3 million items in Russian and foreign languages. Partially represented are publications that do not have paper equivalents, but correspond to parameters such as the value, uniqueness, high demand. Microform publications which are not included in the collection, can be found in such specialized collections as:
- manuscripts
- Russian literature abroad
- rare and valuable books
- literature in Oriental languages
- music publications and audio records
- newspapers
- dissertations
- military literature
- central reference and bibliographical collection
