The resolution of State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles of Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation included the journal into the List of major peer-reviewed editions to publish the essential outcomes of doctoral and PhD (candidate’s) theses. It is recommended by Expert Advisory Bodies in Pedagogics and Psychology; History and Philology.
The journal was established in 1952 under the title of “Biblioteki SSSR. Opyt Raboty” (“The USSR Libraries. Practical Experience”), in 1973 it was transformed into a periodical “Sovietskoye Bibliotekovedenie” (“Soviet Library Science”), since 1993 — “Bibliotekovedenie” ('Library and Information Science'). From 2016, the journal is issued in volumes with continuous page numbering.
Regarding libraries as one of the most important social institutions in the field of culture, science, humanities, education and communications, the journal addresses an extensive range of issues related to the content and structure of library-based activities. It considers library function against the background of the related global developments, both in practical and conceptual terms, integrated into a wider social and cultural context and interrelated with the humanitarian challenges of the modern world.
The members of Editorial Council are world-known researchers, the recognised authorities in the relevant fields of culture, education, science and humanities.
The members of Editorial Board are researching fellows of greatest libraries and universities, branch leaders, PhD (candidate’s) and doctoral degrees holders.
The journal is directed to the audience of librarians and information managers, researchers in library and book trade studies, bibliographers, academics, postgraduates, high school and university students taking courses in Arts and Culture, amateur book-lovers and collectors etc.
In 2002 “Bibiotekovedenije” became a diplomant of the National Award in research in the field of bibliographic, library and book studies and was awarded the Third Prise of the Russian Ministry of Culture.
In 2003 at the Congress for Reading “Bibliotekovedenie” was awarded a Diploma of the National “Zolotoy Lotos” (Golden Lotus) Prise under the slogan “Maintaining the Russian Spirituality”.
In 2005 the journal received a Diploma of the National Award “Annals of Immortality” commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
