XXIV International Conference on the History of Cartography

In July 2011 the XXIV International Conference on the History of Cartography will be held in Moscow. For the first time in the entire history of this forum Russia has been selected as a host.

The Symposium on the History of Cartography, which initiated the conference, was held in July 1964 during the XX International Geographical Congress. Since 1967, the scientists and researchers concerned gather at the cartographic forum, which takes place with the support of the international journal Imago Mundi once every two years.

In 2011 the Russian State Library became the chief organizer of the conference. Among the co-sponsors there are also: State Historical Museum, Russian National Library, Institute of Geography, The S. I. Vavilov Institute of History of Science and Technology, Institute of World History, The Nicholas Roerich International Centre-Museum. The main topic of the future conference will be 'The diversity of cultures in the history of cartography' and its thematic areas will be:

  • Cartographic discoveries: development of new lands and the history of cartography;
  • State. Maps. Society;
  • Innovation and tradition in an era of geographic education;
  • Maps as sacred images;
  • other questions on the history of cartography.

Before the official opening of the forum on July 9, two seminars are scheduled at the Nicholas Roerich International Centre-Museum. After the end of the main conference program, there will be a choice of trips offered to the participants: a day trip to Pereslavl-Zalessky or The Yuri Gagarin Star City cosmonaut training centre (July 16) and a three-day tour of St. Petersburg, which will be held with the assistance of the Russian National Library (1719 July).

The conference will hold several exhibitions, including an exposition organized by the RSL 'Russian map — from drawing to engraving', the exhibitions of rare maps from the collections of the Centre of Oriental Literature and the Department of Manuscripts of the RSL, as well as exhibitions from the State Historical Museum.
